Claire Levy: Diverse representation is critical
I applaud Elise Jones, Deb Gardner and Cindy Domenico for pointing out in a Camera guest opinion the overwhelming whiteness of elected officials throughout Boulder County’s history. I care deeply about working towards racial equity and am encouraged to see wide support for that value.
I am aware that the privilege I have as a white woman has given me advantages throughout my life. In many instances I had access to opportunities in part because those in power looked like me. And so I believe that diversifying representation in leadership positions is critical.
I know that change requires focused and sustained attention. As the leader of a nonprofit organization I instituted monthly staff trainings on implicit bias and racism in order to change the way we worked. Progress requires organization-wide commitment and leadership.
I am committed to doing everything I can to increase access to opportunities for marginalized communities.
